Which wine goes with raclette?

Cheese, potatoes or spicy toppings: three starting points for choosing wine.

Weingut Arnold Pauly editorial team · · 2 min read

Start with the toppings

A raclette table rarely has just one flavour: cheese and potatoes sit alongside mushrooms, vegetables, meat, pickles and sauces. Start with the ingredients that will dominate your meal. Our combinations are suggestions to try, not fixed rules or tasting notes for individual bottles.

Classic cheese and potatoes

If you enjoy dry white wine, our dry Riesling Spätlese is a sensible starting point. Taste a small sip with a fully assembled bite rather than judging it only before the meal. Pickles, mustard and other accompaniments can change the combination considerably.

Spicier and meatier versions

For a second style, set out a feinherb Riesling. With fried mushrooms or meat, consider trying feinherb Spätburgunder too. Label the choices clearly so guests can decide for themselves. Two contrasting wines are enough for a small gathering.

A little planning before buying

Ask about your guests’ preferences and include water and alcohol-free drinks. More bottles do not make a better pairing. Current prices and shipping terms are shown in the shop. Tell us about your cheese, sauces and party size if you would like help choosing.
